Air Box Thermostat 200 1983

I am going to replace the t'stat on my car and now have the part-however a small cap-like looking piece came with it. I have pulled the t'stat assembly and compressed the spring to free up the t'stat. Just that came free, no cap-like piece seems to be removed also.

Does anyone know what this cap is for? Is it needed for the plastic assembly repair?
