Intermittent Speedometer...dead fuel gague 200

Its a 1990 244 with 250k miles and the speedometer is only working sometimes. Its a little frustrating. Is this a common occurance? Where should I start diagnosing the problem.

Also the fuel gague quit a few months ago. This is even more frustrating. I defintley make sure there is gas in it. Any ideas what to check?
