help! 1984 volvo 240: starts and dies

it starts and just dies while driving. sometimes, it coughs and won't accelerate at all.

one shop says it needs a new mass air flow meter ($200 rebuilt, and $400 new), the other says it needs a new wiring harness ($1200). neither can guarantee fixing it even if i spent the money... it's a $900 car...

any suggestions? thanks in advance.
