1988 240 Wagon, Fuel relay continuous clicking 200

Two weeks ago my wagon stalled on the highway. The fuel relay was clicking non stop (about 2 clicks per second) when the ignition key is turned into second stage (next to actually turning over engine in stage 3). The car would start with effort and it would run for only 30 seconds or so before stalling, the engine surging wildly while the relay clicking rapidly and loud. I tried jumping the number 4 and 6 fuse, with no help as relay would continue to click away loudly. I have a brand new (proven to work) spare fuel relay which I put in, no help, the same non stop fast loud clicking. I got towed home and after reading the posts here I put in a new 25 amp fuse holder with new fuse first thing the following morning, and it seemed to cure the problem. Yesterday my car died again with the same exact symptom, loud fast clicking relay, and I'm sure the fuse and its holder I installed is not the problem. I also installed and tested another working main fuel pump today from a parts car I own, didn't help. I have cleaned all main grounds in engine compartment and ground for main fuel pump under rear seat, no help. I'm guessing I have a bad ground wire somewhere, but not sure how to track it down. Any and all suggestions would be greatly appreciated.
Regards, Don
