Whirring Noise - Where From ? What Is It ? 200 1986

'86 sedan. Nearly 210,000 miles. M46 & overdrive tranny. I know this is going to sound odd. For a couple of weeks now I have been hearing a whirring sounding noise. Not too too loud but noticeable. Sounds like it is from rear of engine/tranny/overdrive area. I don't hear it from front or sides with hood open. Only hear it when sitting inside of car. Makes this noise whether driving or parked. Makes this noise whether in gear or in neutral. Darned if I can figure out where it is coming from exactly or what it is. Any help or hints or clues or experience like this I would appreciate. Thanks.
