Transmission shift problem 700 1990

Ok since I have owned the car the transmission has acted a little weird. It will shift from second to first, but really hard. All the other shifting has to be done be letting off of the accelerator. Or frankly, it wont shift by itself. I have heard about the electrical cable shorting out, but i cant find it. does any one know if there could be some other problem? What the car is a 740 GL Wagon. Please help!
