Very strange shifter light problem 900 1995

You know how the light next to the gear you are in is normally illuminated on the panel next to the shifter (P R N D 3 L) ? And the others are not illuminated ?

Well, my '95 964 just started something very odd. Nothing is lit up when in Park. Move to Reverse - Park lights up. Keep moving down - everything above the gear you are in is lit up. So, by the time the shifter is down in Low, everything but Low is illuminated !!

Haven't pulled the side panels off yet - but what the heck's going on ?? Did a bulb fall out or something, and is getting pulled along when the shifter lever is moved ? I've just never seen something like this before....
