Headlight woes on 740 GL-- need urgent diagnostic help 700

Hi,

This morning I had a problem pop up and I NEED this car to run tonight, I need to go to my daughter's band concert.

When I went to turn on the headlights, the brights illumined and the car died. I turned off the brights (or tried to) but they didn't go off. Finally after a lot of clicking the high/low switch they went off, but the low beams were not illumined. After a few more on-off cycles with the headlight switch the low beams came on. Another weird thing: the passenger side headlight is dimmer than the driver's side, and the high-beam indicator and right-side indicator is ever-so-faintly illumined while the headlights are on.

I also tried pulling the fuses for the high beams, thinking there might be a short in that circuit, and hoping that, if there was an issue with the high-low switch, it would just engage the lows with no highs. It did not work.

All running lights are operational in both headlight switch modes, although I notice that the passenger side running lights are a little dim as well.

I have also noticed that the headlight relay makes a loud click when it engages.

Bad headlight relay? Bad ground? Bad switch? I need to make sure this works so I can get to and from the concert.

HELP!

Thaddeus
