Hey all,
The B18 in my daily driver '66 122 is on its last legs and I'm looking to replace it. Finding a B20 is the obvious answer but unfortunately the junkyards around here don't have much in the way of old Volvos, so there's plenty of B230's but not much in the way of B20's (as in I've yet to see one). Not much in the local classifieds either...
I've found a possible donor in a '72 142 (automatic), but its in decent enough shape that I'd rather not send it to the crusher just for the motor.
There's also a 242 turbo with the B21FT locally for the same price (not only running but inspected as well) locally, but again, I'd rather not take the engine and scrap the rest. Plus from what I've read installing a B21FT would be quite an undertaking.
So what to do? Would the B21FT be that bad an install? I'd rather stay with carbs for the moment (would make for an faster swap), but eventually want to convert to Megasquirt. Not sure about going turbo. The B20F in the 142 would pretty much bolt up if I'm not mistaken, but is there anything worth scavenging other than the motor? I recall reading about swapping a 122's brakes / hubs to the 4 wheel disks from an 1800.... is it the same swap with a 142 donor? The sills on it are pretty rusted out and its sat outside for at least 4 years, so its pretty much borderline salvageable.
Any thoughts / opinions? I'm in no terrible hurry since the only problem with the B18 is that the fuel economy sucks (majorly) and it burns an ungodly amount of oil, but otherwise runs ok. Mainly figured I'd spend the winter building up the replacement for an early spring install.
Thanks.

ps- I've currently got an M40 plus OD on the B18, if it makes a difference.
