My Volvo Spaceship... 700 1990

My 740 wagon has begun sounding like a spaceship! The noise is coming from under the hood and begins low and increases in pitch and intensity upon acceleration. There is no correlation to engine speed. Traveling at 40MPH I shift into neutral and hit the gas. The noise remains the same. It happens mostly at slower speeds and worse since the weather has turned colder.

Any advice? Heater core? Water pump? ET's?
