Battery smoking 200

Hi,

I picked up a new to me 91 240 with 148K.
The alternator on the car is new and the Battery
Looks relatively new.

I drove the car home (25 miles) and noticed a bad smell.
I opened the hood and there was smoke coming from

the vent on the battery. Could they have mis -wired the ALT?
or the new ALT is defective?

Any thoughts appreciated.
