Auto Transmission questions... 1993 240 wagon 200

Hello everyone!
Well I have gotten myself to a point where I am REALLY happy with my brick. New tires, alignment, struts, bushings, shocks... drives like a champ!
Only concern I have now is my transmission. I changed the fluid and filter which was nice and clean, no big chunks of metal or even filings. What happens sometimes with the transmission is like nothing I have ever experienced. If I am really stomping down on the gas from a stand still, or when going like 20 mph or so every once and awhile it will act like it comes out of gear allowing the engine to free rev! The engine revs up high and the car is no longer pulling. (maybe it jumps into 1st when it should not?) I naturally back off the throttle right away and it jumps 'back in gear' and everything is fine again. It only happens during almost full thottle acceleration at low speeds but never at highway speeds.
I am thinking about adjusting the kickdown cable, maybe that is the issue? Do they sell 'shift kits' for these cars? Its the AW XX-1 transmission (I don't remember the real number, but I know it's the '1' that makes the difference between the transmissions). The kick down seems fine in normal applications, I'd just like it to kick down a little bit earlier, so less of a petal stomp is needed. Is there a way to 'tune' the length to make it kick down faster/easier?
A shift kit would be great to stiffen up those shifts, but not really needed.

I have solved the problem for now by just not hammering down on the throttle, but I want to have that option if I ever need or want to. :)

Any suggestions or similar experiences?

Generally speaking I understand that these are GREAT transmissions and last a long time, is that true? I have an inherent phobia of automatics letting me down. (my first car was a dodge daytona, I changed the transmission out more often than the engine oil!)

Thanks a ton in advance!
Scott
