oil pressure sender removal 200 1993

Good morning. I am tracking down an oil leak that is pointing to the oil pressure sending unit - this is a single wire type going to the warning light located between the alternator and the oil filter. Any tips for removal? It is pretty tight in there - does removing the oil filter allow better access? I read somewhere it is a 17mm - I don't have a 17 mm deep socket or a 17 mm offset wrench - is that what I need?

I have access to a 5 bar sender from an 87 B230F - is there any reason not to use this - I recall reading that threads in earlier blocks are not metric - do I remember correctly?

Thanks for your time.
