Do I need to install spacers under my strut inserts(shocks)? 200 1993

I recently had the strut inserts (shock absorbers) replaced with the same brand as was installed before (KYB). But I keep getting a metallic clunk when I hit potholes or bumps. I've had the big nut turned down to the correct 13-15 thread exposure on top, but I still get the clunking.
I have ordered and received the strut spacer inserts from FCPGroton. Are these needed on the later (1993) 240 series?
