I need a low cost quick solution to improve traction for my 86 240DL sedan. I currently have a reasonably new set of Merit Metric all season radials which have served me pretty well up until the other night when things got iced over -on top of several weeks of snowfall.
Here is my question and no... I am not going to ask if I can mix studded and studless tires, although it seems like a bunch of old timers seem to do just that:
I have a chance to get (2) nearly new Blizzak siped (studless) snow tires for next to nothing. I am wanting to install the Blizzaks on the rear, and then have the tire shop sipe my Metric front tires. The size on all 4 tires will be matched at 185 70 R14.
I realize it is ideal to always have 4 perfectly matched tires, but it seems like this set-up would be a great improvement over what I've got now... and within my price range.
FYI - I keep my winter driving to a bare minimum, trying to drive slowly and with much caution. I live in the city and primarily use streets that are plowed. I seldom need to go over 45mph, so I'm not worried about hi-speed handling issues.
It's just that we have a fair number of steep hills and on those rare occassions when the rear wheels start to spin, me and the wife get pretty nervous!!
Would appreciate educated advice from fellow enthusiasts! Thanks in advance. I hope everyone has a great weekend!!
