After changing the regina pump in my 1990 740 wagon today I'm having trouble with the very last part, getting the big plastic lock ring to screw back onto the tank, the rubber seal keeps wanting to push the assembly back out again.

Is there a trick to getting the thread started ?

I've been at it for 6 hrs today getting this pump installed, in the snow , but its a wagon so... I'm freezing but I need the car in the mornin.

Thanks to Ryan for a lot of off-list help eliminating the other possible problems.
