Temperature gauge works then doesn't work 200 1988

Temperature gauge works then doesn't work temp gauge reads half or less sometimes in the normal range, and then sometimes it doesn't read at all. I hear that the temp compensating board gets corroded and to sand it with fine grit sand paper. If so where is it located and what does it look like? Any other tips welcomed.
