looking for some advice. the transmission on my 81 245 has been
gradually getting noisier and I have been advised that a bearing in
the gear box (m46 w/overdrive) is going. I have been driving it like
this for a long time - about 80k Miles !, but its gradually getting
more noticeable. I was advised to search for a used gear box to put
in. Would a typical transmission place be able to rebuild my existing m46. one shop advised just getting a used one and reinstalling. Also a section of the drive shaft is supposedly bent and needs to be replaced. - Would getting one from a junk yard work just fine (assuming its not bent!) or do they need to be balanced?
untill then I was wondering if anyone had any advice on something
I can add to the tranmission oil. I have been using the volvo
recommended type F ATF, but I was wondering if adding something
heavier would help get me by for a while longer. Any one had sucess
with say heavier gear oil or the transmission additives like the thick
Lucas stuff? any suggesteions appreciated including rebuilding
existing transmission vs. installing used one. Anyone recommend a
place to rebuild an M46 in LA/West LA. Thanks!
