Valve Adjust Shims, silly idea? 900 1994

I have two Volvos. A 1990 740GL (425,000 miles) and a 1994 940 (83,000 miles)and it is time to adjust valves on both of them. I have done the 740 in the past and messing with the shim kit, postage, special tools, etc. is a real pain in the neck. I am wondering if anyone has considered using .001, .002, or whatever, shim stock placed UNDER the adjusting disks in the cup of the valve depressor to effect a thicker shim. (This assumes that the wear on the valve train results in the need for a thicker shim.) I would propose cutting the shim stock into a circle of the approximate diameter of the adjusting disk and placing it into the upper well of the valve depressor. This may be a really silly idea but it would make the job so much easier. Any thoughts? Problems with different coefficients of thermal expansion? Whatever?

Guy P.

P.S. I also have a 2003 S60 which doesn't need a valve adjust.
