Did Volvo do this to the output flange nut on the 93-95 940's and if so, why?

1994 944T 175K

I replaced the pinion seal and rear main seal on this car this week. Can anyone tell me why the flange nut on the transmission output shaft would be indented like that. Looks like a strike with a chisel and heavy hammer.
