Throttle Linkage Dust Cover 444-544

Why is it always the "Little Things"? I am having a problem keeping a Rubber Grommet ("Dust Cover" P/N 661967) intact. This is the rubber boot that protects the throttle linkage as it comes through the firewall.

Life span of NEW parts is about two weeks before a tear in the "bellows" appears. At about $11 each plus shipping, this is not only aggravating but costly in the long run.

I see no apparent way to adjust the rod ("Pedal Shaft" P/N 663316) that comes through the firewall and penetrates the Dust Cover and is - in my opinion - the only possible cause of the wear and tear as it moves up and down. Anyone with similar history or suggested cures?
