Thermal Switch for 72 D-Jet 1800

Hello,
I'm helping a friend with a restoration of a 72 1800. He took it apart a while ago and I'm trying to help put all the pieces together again.
The Thermal Switch for the Fuel Inj system screws into the engine block to the left of the oil filter. On some cars there is a metal adaptor that reduces the distance the sensor extends into the block. This is screwed in the block, then the sensor is screwed into the adaptor.
My friends problem, Neither the adaptor nor the sensor appear to have the same thread size as the hole in the block.
Do some engines have no adaptor with sensor directly screwed into the block? The hole appears to be too small for the adaptor.
My 71 B20E has a water stopcock in that location. The hole is more that size on the 1800 motor.
Maybe the hole is all bunged up?
thanks
Joel
