740 charging system - HIGH VOLTAGE at 16.5V 700 1991

Hi ALL,

1991 740 sedan, B230f auto, Regina Ignition System, 90K kilometers, immaculate.

The battery died today, it's 2 years old.
I replaced it, measured the voltage while the car is running, and at the battery terminals it reads approx 16.5V.
At the back of the alternator, all connected and the car running, it reads 17.1V.

I replaced the regulator assembly on the alternator, with a used one with new brushes, same voltage readings.

Can I assume I need to replace the alternator unit/core? The voltage should be approx 14.5V right?

Anything else it can be? I want to fix this quickly, though I do not know how long it has been like this, I worry about causing problems to the electronics.

Thanks for your input. Sorry I have not been on the board much lately.
