Single to Double DIN Radio Conversion? (1992 960) 900

I have a '92 960 that originally had a CR-814 (single DIN) head unit, and would like to install a later-model double height head unit. Will I need the black console piece the radio sits in out of another 960, or does cutting the existing part work ok?

I only have access to one double-height radio mount an it has some kind of wood grain firmly applied to it that I'm not sure will come off. On the other hand, I'm not opposed to cutting the part that's in the car right now if I would still have the option of installing an aftermarket single height unit using a double DIN kit at a later date. Has anyone fit a later-model radio into a 960 before? If so, how'd you do it? Thanks for the help!
