Noise in the driveline ..please help if possible 900 1994

The wifes 940 ('94 260k) has developed a whirring/loose noise in the transmission area - came on suddenly. When pulling away the sound makes me think it could be a tail shaft problem, but ....
the sound is still there in Park (just different) so that would rule out a tail shaft bushing, right?

I have no good Volvo tech in my area, so my choice is a well recommended shop - servicing all makes. I know it could be anything, and I did look in the FAQs and saw nothing.

I am hoping that someone might have encountered something like this, and will give me a bit of a heads up before I take it to the shop.
