Third brake light 200

1989 245 157000 miles. Just replaced wiring harness to tailgate thru hinge on drivers side. Third brake is now energized with lights on, and goes out when I hit the brakes. Also noticed with brakes lit, the third brake will light and go out as the tailgate is lifted? I suspect stretching of harness? Any ideas greatly appreciated. I hate electrical problems.
