ZF Rack Question 200 1986

Hello,

Hope you all having or about to have a nice Easter Weekend. My only kid is coming in for the weekend so looking forward to it.

Inga my faithful 86 245DL 231K has had a small leak of steering fluid for year now. We are talking a tiny dot on the drive and adding a little fluid every couple of months. After reading up on racks and replacements, assumed that replacing it was the fix. Last week it became a full blown driveway staining massive leak. Cleaned the heck out of the rack first and then replaced all of the hoses from the reservoir and the pump to the rack. Those were the original hoses and need to be replaced anyway. Got everything tight, clean and now back to the tiny leak. Being a slow leak of course it is hard to find, at least for me. This is coming from the same area where the hoses connect to the rack. At least that it seems to be. The boots are in good shape over the tie rods and I do not see any leaks in that area.

The two lines that connect to the right and left side of the rack were not touched. My thinking right now (but the BB has great sway over that) is that replacing the seals on those lines might just fix the leak. I have no idea what the seals are on those lines are or how to remove them. And not sure if I should even be thinking about working on them and want guidance. Any warnings or tips on tightening those. And what kind of seals do these have? It looks like a big hex nut hold them to the rack and those are the seals installed at the factory. Want to read up in the Bentley and get your advice before pulling that belly pan off and getting back in there.

Thanks in advance for all your input,

Regards,

Paul
