Occassional noise from transmission area 900 1994

Car has 143K miles on it. Well serviced.

Lately I'm sometimes hearing a sound coming from where my auto-transmission gearshift is that sounds almost exactly like a cassette tape rewinding. A whirring sound.

My mechanic says "one of your transmission bushings is wearing out. I can't do nothing about that, it is too hard. You gotta replace all the bushings at the same time and take the whole d__n transmission out to do it. You need to just wait. It should be no problem for a while."

What do the rest of you experienced folks say about this? How urgent/critical/ expensive is this going to be? Can I wait until there is a lot more noise? How long? Right now it is intermittent...

Thanks,

Markus
