Headliner repair thoughts 700

The headliner on my new 740 is kinda nasty looking. It's not all drooping down, just the sunroof part is, but I'm sure the rest isn't far behind.

I've done the search and read the two pages of results, and I've been through the FAQ. I know this is not a new subject. I am also not a complete newbie to this, having fixed a headliner in a Chevy before.

First of all, everybody talks about the headliner board being fragile. Anyone know if it is more or less fragile than the headliner out of an 80's Chevy? I cracked that one in a couple of places, and I fixed it by gluing paper to it. I'm wondering if gluing thin fabric all over the thing might not strengthen it a lot more.

Which brings me to the next thought. A few people talked about using vinyl for headliner in place of foam-backed fabric, and a couple have done it. I really like the idea of vinyl headliner, I loved it in my 240. One thing that was mentioned is that gluing thin vinyl straight to the board will show all the imperfections. I'm wondering if gluing some thin fabric, like an old bed sheet, to the board first would cover those up, in addition to making the board stronger. Maybe thicker fabric instead of foam?

Thoughts?
