Say it ain't so ... or is it? B23F octane requirement , that is. 200 1983

I've been pretty psyched about the prospects of getting my newly acquired bargain '83 wagon up and running. I finally have commandeered some time over the next few days to tackle a head gasket job (my first).
Lately though, I have come across a few posts stating that knocking/pinging will result if a B23F is run on less than premium gas. Is this true?! 87 octane just rose to $3.26 gal. today at my usual station! I'll be saddened if I have to fork over another $.50 a gal. to keep my car running well. What's the consensus out there? Thanks!
Jim
