door panels not flush due to previous surgery 900 1993

What would cause the panels on my 93 965 to not sit flush?

this is a car that I recently purchased for short money and it has a lot of miles. One aspect of the auto archaeology I have been able to deduce is that the PO had to do some surgery on the doors in order to retro-fit some lock cylinders into the doors. So, whomever replaced the door panels did an awful job at getting them to sit flush.

Thanks for advice.
