My gas guage is at empty when I know I have gas in the tank 900

Hi there,
I have an intermittent problem. Sometimes I will look at my gas gauge and it is at empty when I know I have a half a tank or 3/4 of a tank. I am guessing I need to replace some sort of relay or something, but I have no idea. Any thoughts?
