Is any Anti-Freeze other than Volvo Anti-Freeze acceptable? 900 1996

Because I have seen warnings in this forum regarding not using any except Volvo Anti-Freeze, I have been putting off changing my coolant until I can manage to get some Volvo Coolant. I am overdue to change it, and I need to know if any other Anti-Freeze is reliable to use in my 1996 960 without having to be worried about doing in my engine, and having to buy an new one? I live on a Hawaiian island without any reasonable access to Volvo Anti-freeze until I can get to Honolulu and ship some to myself. Are there any other known Anti-Freezes that will not harm my engine besides Volvo? I do have access to NAPA and Checker Auto Parts, as well as some lesser known auto parts stores, along with Wal-Mart and K-Mart here.
