I'm as cheap as they come, so everything seems expensive to me....
The A/C quit working on our 90 740 (280,000 miles) last week. I put 2 lbs of R134A in it, but within a couple days it was blowing warm again. Not being equiped to do any serious A/C repair, I took it to a local shop for a diagnosis and repair. They pressurized the system and with an infrared dye traced the problem to a corroded low pressure line that connects to the compressor. (I don't know how long the line is - possibly runs all the way up to the accumulator???) They want $390 for all the parts and labor. How far out of line would you consider that?
