This is a problem I never thought I would have! I now have several 1800s (just bought a sleeping beauty, a '71E), but now I'm trying to locate/fit the wiper arms onto my '69 1800S. I have a BIG BOX of around 50-60 various wiper arms, from parting out cars over the last 15 years. I can pretty much tell which ones are for the PVs (444,544), and for the late 1800s. Do the right and left 1800 wiper arms have the same dimensions, angles, length, etc? I.e., do I NEED a right AND a left, or does one arm fit BOTH sides?
The '71E has the kind with the pin hanging down for the blades, (already on the car, whew!), so no big mystery there. All the others are of the bayonette type. These have different types of ends, either angled, dipped (shallow "U"), or just plain straight at the end. They all have a small raised bump, about the size of a large pin-head, which engages the blades. Wiper arms for the PV544 seem long enough, but it doesn't make sense that they would be the same as the 1800, does it? I have a bunch of arms for the 120 series, but those look too short to cover the large 1800 windshield. I know that within the various 1800 years, some of the arms were chrome plated, while others (later 60s?) were brushed pot metal. Chrome IS prettier, but,...
At this point, I just want something to keep me safe in a downpour, so perfect originality is a secondary concern. That means I'll get creative if I have to. I remember seeing an article on wiper arm identification in an old SEES newsletter, ca. 1996. It might have been from Bob Stein, of New York, RIP. Good man, miss him. Anyone have a reprint of that article?
BTW, I did a search before I posted, so as not to bore folks with repetitious questions. If anyone needs some of these, I can't use 30+ pairs! Trades for NOS stuff, anything for older Volvos, all types, always welcome, Thanx, R.
