Manual Transmission, issue getting into Reverse 200 1982

So I was working on my stick itself - I managed to pull the ball all the way off when I was initially testing out the car before I bought it and ripped the wires off o the OD switch, and ultimately had to jimmy-rig it with the switch hanging off the side - and getting the OD switch back in place (more or less achieved...have to kind of hit it to get it to switch off, and sometimes on, but it works).

Of course, when I say "I", I really mean my sister's boyfriend, because I'm inept it seems.

Anyways, he didn't realize that that little ring around the stick was part of what gets it into reverse, and started to try to take the screw off, when I saw that, I told him "no, you can't do that, that's got nothing to do with what we're doing", and so he started screwing it back in, and the head of the screw broke off.

Long story short, now when I pull up on the ring, it doesn't pull the mechanism that makes it work right, so I have to reach under the stick boot and pull it up from there.

Is it a safe bet that I can just take that off, figure out how to get the remaining screw piece out and get a new one, and screw it just as it was before, and it should grab the piece that it isn't grabbing (or maybe get a new piece at a graveyard)? Or is my stick totally screwed?

Thanks!
