Had an external leak to the head gasket. A friend recommended head gasket stop leak stuff. Maybe slowed the leak a little, but engine then ran hotter due to (I guess) constricted coolant passages. Head gasket is fixed now. Will a different thermostat help? The temp doesn't get into the red but runs half way between the 9 o'clock normal and the red. Thanks
