headlights tied to taillights and dash lights? 200 1986

Ok, so I've looked through the archives and haven't quite found anything relating to what I'm

encountering on my '86 244dl.

When I turn on the headlight switch to the main beam "on" position, not only do the headlamps not come

on, my dash lights, parking & tail lamps don't come on as well.

When the switch is in the parking lamp position, all the lights work (front parkers, rear tails,

dashboard & instrument lights)

All the lights work on their own...high beam switch is good.

I've tested the stepper relay on the inner fender by running a wire right from the yellow wire's

contact on the light switch to the yellow wire's contact on the relay. I forgot the pin #'s, but you

guys know the one I'm talking about.
When jumped like this, the headlights work when the light switch is on main beams and the ignition

switch in the I or II position.

So, I'm guessing it's not the stepper relay since high beams work and mains work.
Not the ignition switch.

So, who thinks it's the main lamp relay? On my '86, does that little sucker hide on the left kick

panel under the metal "foot" rest where the floor sort of meets the firewall?

Could it be the BFSR? I'm thinking no on that one.

The thing that really rubs me the wrong way is that the taillights and instrument lights don't work as

well when the headlight switch is on and they do in the park light position.

One of you has had to have dealt with this....please somebody know the answer.
Also, anyone have a good online source of some easier to read wiring diagrams for the lighting systems?

thanks.

J
