Lighting Issue on a Wagon 200 1989

For a long time now I've had a strange wiring issue that I'm looking for advice on. I apologize for posting without doing obvious/basic troubleshooting procedures.
First my cruise control has never worked since I bought it. I've heard stuff about fried rear lights circuit board messing up your CC.
For a while now when I depress my brake pedal most of the indicator lights in my cluster light up with the car off. Sometimes when I'm driving the rear-defrost switch will illuminate on its own. More recently, while driving I'll brake and the bulb failure light will turn on in sync suggesting brake light failure even though all the bulbs in back are good. Last night I noticed depressing the brake pedal will light up my headlights and the light in the rear window will be off until I put er in park in which case it will slowly illuminate.
The wires inside the wagon hatch hinges are visibley broken/corroded which I assumed was my problem. I'll be starting there but wondering if anyone recognizes these symptoms as something different.
Again sorry to post w/out basic troubleshooting.
Also, pressing the brake pedal will always make a gassy noise-or the sound of air being pushed out of something- Is this a leak in my vaccum line around the brake pedal area or something else?
Love the site and thanks in advance to any comments!
