AW70 Overdrive Switch Faulty? 200 1993

OD problem. 1993 Volvo 244. AW70 transmission. Here are the symptoms. Scenario 1: Upon startup, OD light is ALWAYS on. Pushing OD switch button on shifter repeatedly on/off typically will not shut off upshift light, but occasionally does. Upshift light doesn't even flicker when switching on/off repeatedly. Once on the road with upshift light still on, tranny shifts as it should, including into OD 4th. BUT, upshift light stays on for an indeterminate period until it eventually fades away. It may fade back on later, but does not downshift in so doing.

Scenario 2: Same as scenario 1, EXCEPT once on the road, the tranny will not shift into OD 4th, ever. The only way to remedy this is to slow down to a stop, shut off engine, restart and drive off again. Now upon restart, the upshift light is typically OFF and the tranny shifts normally up into OD, like there never was a problem. Press the OD switch and tranny shifts down into third gear with OD upshift light lit up. Press again, and OD is engaged, light goes off as it should. Perfect operation.

Does this description sound like a faulty shifter OD switch? Or possibly a bare wire? In checking the archives, I haven't found an OD issue with symptoms exactly like this.
