anyone tried to replace the throttle cable? 200 1991

the new throttle cable (or, rather, the cable and housing assembly) i got from fcp groton is so stiff that the plastic adjuster snapped when i tried to get it in place. on my '91 the cable assembly needs to make a bend before it reaches the firewall. because of this bend, the sheer tension in the cable would break that little threaded adjuster at neck. has anyone had this problem? any know cures?
