Today, after reading everything on the FAQ about shock replacement on the rears, I went ahead and jumped in. Well..... the old Sachs shocks (originals?) came out without too much trouble and cursing. However, the new shocks were just *miserable* to attempt to install. Much cursing ensued.
{I am using cheap Gabriel gas shocks ($21/each) after debating on something better. I don't think I'll be keeping this car all that long, and since I'm doing the brakes now, I needed to limit my spending on this component.}
How in the world is one supposed to fit the shocks in the upper mount hole? I could not even get the shock I had just removed back in after thinking I would give up altogether. I ended having to grind down the collar on the Gabriel shock a LOT to get it to fit in. I'm having visions of this now klunking like crazy. Well, you get what you pay for in some ways, I guess.
Is this normal and do the Bilsteins and Sachs/Boge require this sort of futzing with?
