Tire makes thumping noise

My wife's 1997 Geo Prism (Toyota Corolla) has a tire that makes a thumping noise as it rotates. It makes that tread-like sound when you drive over a small crack in the road or have something stuck in the tread. I also notice this same sound on other vehicles, especially semi-trucks. It almost sounds like something inside the tire isn't kosher.

It's the driver's-side front tire. The car drives nice and straight. The tires are older - I had planned to replace them before the winter, but should I replace it now because of this?
