Viability of '88 760 auto to manual swap.

I've been considering swapping out the tranny in my '88 760 turbo for an m46, but I've heard that it wasn't the best idea because of the interior and the IRS system. Would this even be possible without essentially destroying the car? Also, is it even something that I could do myself, or would I have to take it somewhere to have it done?
