How do I change the kickdown cable on a '88 740 turbo? 700 1988

I am doing some mechanic work on my wifes grandfathers '88 740 Turbo wagon with a auto trans. His kickdown cable needs replaced. Basiclly the outer sheath broke away from the crimped end up by the throttle body. So the throttle body end looks easy enough so I followed it back to the trans and found where it goes into the trans. I pulled the pan and can see where it wraps around a spool inside the trans. But it sure looks like I have to pull the valve body to get to it. Somebody please tell me that is not the case!!!

I am a VW mechanic and know what I am doing but this car is a huge PITA compared to what I normally work on. And to top it all off I am doing this for free. So far I have did a timing belt, tensioner, water pump, all the front engine seals, replaced all the drive belts, cleaned/resealed the breather box, cleaned out the flame trap, replace the plugs, wires, cap, rotor, and replaced a valve stem on the tire. Now after all that was done I find a bad kickdown cable after a spirited test drive. This car is killing me.
