This is the week for August weather - 94F and 85% relative humidity. A/C is second only to food.
At startup and for a while the A/C blows strong and cold. We usually set the temp low so as to get the metal mass of the evaporator chilled before the system quits.
When it quits, it just quits chilling the air. Fan stays OK. Wife says it seems sometimes to happen when car goes over a bump/pavement chip.
Refrigerant is full, maybe overly so. My experience is with the 240 R-12 expansion valve system. No cool means add Freon. System sucks in what it needs, no overfill problem.
Last time I added refrigerant, last week it was, car ran a long time all doors open and temp at minimum settng. Hood up. Vents blew plenty cold air.
The compressor never kicked out, and about 3/4 of a can of R134a went in.
Next morning wife.sig takes wifemobile to work (22 miles OW). Same-O Same-O.
Air gets warmer, turn off a/c using the a/c button. Blue light goes out. Leave everything else as it was, and count to 30 seconds. Turn on A/C, get chilled air. Repeat as needed.
This week it has deteriorated. The count of 30 must now be 40. And on one homeward bound trip it never did kick back in. Very unhappy wife.sig.
I heard about Variable orifice tubes in lieu of expansion valve, and the 960 no doubt uses one. Can it be clogging up and breaking loose?
Maybe there is a glitch in the control system. I have the Volvo wiring diagram book, so I might be able to trace something.
Anybody got an idea of where to start? It's not a horse so I can't shoot it.
Many thanks to all who respond.
Regards,
Bob
