Hi Guys,
I live in Northern NSW in Australia
This is the first time I have used an online forum so please accept my appologies in advance for any rules I have broken also any sugestions re how structure posts ( looking ,mine seens lengthy and a bit of a ramble ) would be greatly apprecieted.
So here we go
I have just purchased a 1995 940 s wagon. It has an 4 speed Auto and the motor is a 2.3 lt with fuel injection and a intercooled turbo.
I purchased the car having done very little inspection ( over the internet from a different state) Interior is perfect, Body has absolutely no rust dents or normal wear signs, tyres are all still with 80% tread and spare is brand new. Suspention and Stearing is very snug and quiet ( so you get the picture, prevoius owners appeared to lookafter the vehicle) they told me that the engine needed a tune and that they had been told that the gearbox was due for a big service( 200000km on clock)
I took a Gamble and bought it, drove it out onto the freeway once warm I booted it up the first long hill I came to at 4500rpm the engine spat what looked like a litre of oil out the dipstick tube ( very dramatic oil on exhaust manifold produced a rooster tail plume of smoke but no oil light came on ) I shut it down straight away and pondered the gravity of all of my savings I had blown ( student so it carried extra weight) after a while the oil light not comming on didnt make sence to me I checked to dipstick and the levle was still slightly over full. ( I made the conclusion that the previous owner had over filled the sump and having driven mainly at low revs therfore not creating enough presure to push oil out the dipstick ( my fear is that the rings afe fucked and blow by is forcing oil out) since this incident I have driven the vehicle home 1300klm's and no fruther oil leaks and no blowing of smoke underload or revs. ( do you guys think I can accept my laymans diagnosis of over filling????)
second problem,
engine has a very rough idle, and a sort of tack tack sound like a very slightly sticky hydraulic lifter but more like an exhaust leak at the gasket between the head and the exhaust manifold ( I havnet been able to find it so far)
I am unsure if the exhaust leek sound is related to the rough idle I had a look in the engine running performance section and maybee trotle body is clagged any suggestions
finally are there and adjustments that can be made to the gear box as kick down cable is very loose and gearbox holds in low gear far too long this makes the relationship between gear change and engin speed all wrong and producing very rough changes going up in direction and as soon as any load is applied eg cruising a 100kmph on slight hill drops to third gear feels too revy and doesnt use any tourqe or turbo boost. ( I am not sure if this is naturally a revy engine and the gear box is set up to use revs more that torque with boost and the exhaust leek is making the engine sound like it is working too hard or if the gear bos is adjusted all wrong or if the gearbox is fucked and Ive done my money) what do you guys recon????
Thanks for your time having a look and for any advice you might have
Dave
