AMM questions 700 1989

After replacing O2 sensor and spark plugs car runs poorly. I confirmed correct plug wire sequence.

Then tried disconnecting AMM. Car started and ran better. Reconnected while running and car died. Questions:
Did my AMM just happen to go bad at the same time I did O2 sensor and other work? Did I damage AMM by reconnecting while car was running?

Thanks for any help you can offer.
