Mystery Wires Above Alternator? 200 1985

My girlfriend and I are preparing to take her 1985 240 wagon on a very long road trip. I am trying to familiarize myself with the arrangements under the hood in case something happens along the way. I noticed two things while poking around under the hood:

1. There seems to be a detatched group of wires wrapped in a plastic harness arrangement directly above the alternator. Does anyone know what purpose these originally served, and if it's something I need to look into before my trip?

2. There is a shroud over the exhaust manifold that appears to have had a metal hose or some ducting attached to it originally. It is now completely gone. Is this something that should be in place, too?

Thanks in advance for your advice and guidance. I do need to get the Bentley, as I'm sure it would answer most of these questions.

Aaron
