The old thing won't shift out of first. Is it toast, or is this a familiar problem?

What would it cost for a tranny I could swap into a '92 740. Would a boneyard box be worth the trouble, or should we plan on getting a rebuild?

And on a related issue: the best argument for using premium gas is?
